Taj Mahal Tea House is a large bungalow (house) converted into a tea cafe and restaurant in a quaint neighborhood in Bandra, Mumbai. It is located on the same street as a very nice restaurant, Bangalow 9 on St. John Baptiste. St. John Baptiste branches off from a vibrant Chapel Road where Lilavati Hospital, Salt Water Cafe, Starbucks and cute small shops are lined up.
Taj Mahal Tea House is a tea shop created from a tea brand Taj Mahal Tea by Hindustan Unilever. By the way Hindustan is a word for India in Hindi. It is not affiliated with Taj Mahal hotels just in case you are wondering like I did.
It seems that there are more coffee shops in Mumbai than tea houses in Mumbai, which surprised me as India is known for tea plantations. Since there are not many tea houses, going to a tea house feels very special. The cozy and quiet set up at Taj Mahal Tea House makes it a lovely hideout from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai. It opens at 7:30 a.m. which is unusual in India where everything opens much later and makes it convenient for breakfast.
My girl friends and I went to Taj Mahal Tea House for breakfast. Some of us ordered an Indian breakfast dish and one of my friends ordered a waffle. I liked the Parsi scrambled eggs on a toast. The eggs looked greenish with some sauce. I had a bite of the waffle and it was very tasty, too! We had a lovely time savoring the breakfast in a quiet corner with an individual tea pot. The tea menu had a variety of teas and it was fun to choose from the list. The pricing of the food and tea was very reasonable for the Mumbai standard.
