Project KOI XI ☆ Delicious Bar Food









I have to apologize to you that this is going to be short as I have a headache. Probably lack of sleep.

I took the photos above several weeks ago at KOI Gallery in Kemang with my Canon PowerShot S3IS. The mouth-watering smell of the Fried Enoki, Vietnamese Spring Rolls and Cheese and Bread spread in the room and it was very inviting. It was very hard for me to fight the temptation to reach over to the food during the photo shoot. I set this table imagining this was a party and it’s the time for appetizer and socializing. I asked Alain Cornil, the owner of KOI, what would be good looking plates to have on a table for photo shoot and he suggested Fried Enoki and Spring Rolls. The Cheese with Bread was my pick.

After the photo shoot, I had a chance to taste the food. A hint of hot spice in Fried Enoki and the crispy texture were totally addictive. I even attempted to make this at home. (I could not get the flavor and crispy texture! I have to go to KOI for them.) The vegetarian spring rolls were refreshing and just the right amount to have before the main course. The Cheese with Bread calls for a glass of wine. No, I didn’t have any in case you are wondering. If the Cheese and Bread is for wine, the Fried Enoki is for beer to accompany.

These dishes reminded me of “izakaya” in Japan. Izakaya is a bar restaurant where people go to drink and enjoy food that goes well with their alcoholic beverages. The dishes at izakaya are in small portions just like tapas and you usually share dishes with others. It might be fun for you to order a bunch of bar food at KOI before you have dinner and share them with your friends. They will entertain your evening for sure.

数週間前にケマンにあるKOI Galleryで、キャノンのPowerShot S3ISを使って上の写真を撮影しました。美味しそうな揚げエノキ、ベトナム春巻き、チーズとパンの匂いが部屋に広がって、誘ってきました。写真を撮っている最中に手を伸ばして食べたくなる欲求をコントロールするのは、とても大変でした。このテーブルをセットする際、これは夕食パーティーで、食事の前の前菜の時間、と想像してスタイリングをしてみました。 KOIのオーナーであるアラン・コーニールさんに、写真で見栄えのする食べ物は何かと尋ねたとき、揚げエノキと春巻きを提案してださいました。チーズとパンは私が選びました。

撮影の後で、お食事を味見する機会がありました。揚げエノキは、辛いスパイスが入ったカリカリの衣が後を引きます。病み付きになりそう。家でも作ってみたのですが、やはり味や衣の具合を真似する事ができませんでした。ベジタリアンの春巻きは、とてもさっぱりしていて、前菜としてとても量が適量で良かったです。チーズとパンは、ワインが欲しくなりますね。ちなみに、撮影中もその後も飲んでいませんよ。念のため。チーズとパンがワインなら、揚げエノキはビールを片手に食べる感

これらのお食事は、日本の居酒屋を想いました。タパスのような小皿のお食事は、お酒ととても相性が良さそうです。一度KOIでお食事をする前に、バーのメニューから小皿の品を数品頼んでみてはいかがでしょうか?上記の3品は、飲み物のおつまみにきっと楽しんでもらえると思います。

    Kaho, I like the ambiance at Koi, luv the table as well, Lovely industrial vintage, I would like to have one for my dining table (smaller size).
    I hope you can post and share more dining experience in Jakarta, it will be a lovely lovely post that I longing to read :)

    Hi Kaho, I stumbled upon your blog as I was researching on KOI Kemang. My goodness, can I just say your photos are amazing, especially considering that they are not taken with a DSLR. It really is about the person behind the gear rather than the gear itself :)

    Great photos indeed, totally enjoy looking at them
